The best way to do it, although it is very frustrating, is to use WDump and look and see all the settings used in the original model and match them to make a new one yourself. You could try just changing the colour of the texture to something other than grey, but it won't look exactly like you want it to. The thing is, the texture has no colour at all, they apply a colour to the plane object using shaders in 3ds max. I had another look and sfe_menubackground.w3d is the same in BFME2, they just changed the textures used for it. I will get back to you once I can hunt it down for bfme2. I would have to look, but I'm sure it's just another w3d file for bfme2.
